Work it like a hobby, get paid like it’s a hobby.
Are you a business owner or just pretending?
Okay, I’m talking to you, the Beachbody Coach, but from here on out, we’re not going to talk about Beachbody Coach or I’m just a coach or I’m just Emerald or I’m just Diamond or I’ve only been in 6 months or I’ve only been in for 1 year. My name is Coach Jimmy. My name is Jimmy Hays Nelson, but people tend to call me Coach Jimmy and I have been in this business for 8 years and notice the words and the theme that I continue to use. Business, because that’s what this is. And I’m talking to you because regardless of how long you’ve been in, what rank you are, where you are, how much you’ve accomplished, or how much you haven’t done yet and you feel like it isn’t good enough, you’re a business owner. So let’s get rid of all these other labels of Coach, Emerald, Diamond, Beachbody Coach, Elite, whatever. You’re a business owner. So I got a question for you, are you treating this like a business?
If you had gone and built a big brick and mortar, traditional business would you be treating your business different than you are right now? My thought is probably yes. Because in a traditional big brick and mortar business, you have to spend thousands upon thousands upon thousands of dollars in loans, you have no guarantee of hitting a profit in your first, I don’t know, first one, two, three, sometimes five years. Most of those things go bankrupt. But you didn’t have to do that did you? You didn’t have to go get a big loan. You didn’t have to get investors. You don’t have a board that you have to answer to. Nope. You and you. You got started in this business for under $200 that can pay you well over seven figures. I know, because it’s done that for me and my family. So what is it? What’s the difference?
Is this a hobby to you?
The difference is that some people treat this like a hobby. This cute little thing where I lost some weight and I tell my friends about it and they can lose some weight too. Which is great! At the heart of what we do, that’s exactly, that’s exactly what we do, but I was told early on in my career, again business term, my career as a coach that if I treated this like a hobby, it would pay me like a hobby and if I treated this like a business, it would pay me like a business. Now, I’ll be the first to tell you that I didn’t get into this as a Beachbody Coach for financial gain.
You got started in this business for under $200 that can pay you well over seven figures. I know, because it’s done that for me and my family.
I was a broke, out of work actor, a three time college dropout, and at one time of my life, I was 100 pounds overweight. I found a community in Beachbody that changed my life and I said that I want to be a part of that. I want to be a part of that community of people that saw something in me before I saw it in me and maybe that’s the exact same reason you got in, but once you’re in, if you will treat this like a business, you will impact more lives. You will be, you will yield greater significance in the people that you love and care about. You will impact more people, you will help change more lives. If you quit dilly dallying around and treat this like a business and what do I mean by business?
If you’re the CEO of a major corporation, you show up every day. Good days, bad days, days that you feel like it, days that you don’t, because you’ve got stuff to do because you have to answer to, right? You’re responsible as a business owner and you don’t want that business to go out of business. You’ve got to get up and start running that thing. So, what are you doing? Are you treating this like a hobby or are you treating this like a profession, like a career?
Make it a priority
And maybe you have a separate career that you consider your career and that’s fine. But I’m going to challenge you to act as if. As if this was your only source of income. Act as if you are that Diamond coach, that star Diamond coach. Act as if you’re making one, two, five, ten thousand dollars a week in this business because there are thousands of people already doing that. That’s the good news for you that if somebody has done this before, you can do it too! And what’s so easy is that nowadays with technology just like this, you can pop up a video and every top leader is sharing their answers with you.
But if you just fluff it off, if you don’t treat it like a business, then it’s not going to change. If it doesn’t become a priority, that if you’re working this thing at least an hour a day and I don’t care if that’s 20 minutes in the morning, 20 minutes at lunch, and 20 minutes before bed, that somewhere along the lines you make this a priority. It’s a non-negotiable. To do the things that we have to do be successful. That’s constantly talking to new people. That’s following up with people that have shown interest. That’s staying consistent and sharing your story even when it feels like nobody is watching or the only time you’re getting feedback it’s negative or people rolling their eyes. Do you know how many of my friends 8 years ago rolled their eyes at me? Do you know how many of those friends call me now and say, “Dude, congrats. You were right. I wish I’d have jumped in with you. Congratulations. You didn’t listen to me.”
Because at the end of the day, those people’s opinions are just that. They’re opinions and other people’s opinions don’t pay my bills. They don’t get me out of debt. Other people’s opinions didn’t allow me to take my wife out of a corporate job that was sucking the life out of her. The worst thing ever was after our son was born and her maternity leave was up, watching her have to go back into the workforce and leaving me at home you know with a newborn baby. That was fire under me to work this like a business even with a newborn and me at home not knowing what the hell I was doing because I had goals. I had things that I wanted to change.
Don’t miss the greatest opportunity of your life
The other thing I want to talk about that I see so many coaches getting into is you get into this success club race where you’re just selling challenge packs, right? You’re selling programs and you’re hitting success club, but you’re not bringing any new coaches into your business. You’re not building your team and success club is great and it’s awesome to get such a retail commission for helping someone get started on their health and fitness journey. But if that’s as far as you’re going to take this, you might as well go get any sales job in the world. Go sell computers, go sell cars, you’re not tapping into the magic of this business.
That was fire under me to work this like a business even with a newborn and me at home not knowing what the hell I was doing because I had goals. I had things that I wanted to change.
If you’re not putting the business opportunity in front of 3, 5, 10 people a week, you’re gonna slowly, slowly grow and this is one of the few businesses where it truly is fast is fun, slow is painful. And think about this, why wouldn’t you share the business part of this with somebody? Is it benefiting you? Is it something that has changed your world? Whether it’s being part of the community or the fact that you’re earning some income, all the different benefits that go along with being a coach and being part of this amazing community. You’re doing other people a favor when you ask them to take a peek at something. To take a look at a video, to listen to a call, to jump in on a team presentation, whatever third party tool you’re using to let people learn more about this.
“Well, what if they say no, Jimmy? What if they judge me? What if they say they don’t want to be a coach yet?” You know what? They’re going to say that anyway, but what if? What if that person that you’ve already decided they wouldn’t be interested in this, what if you don’t know what their home life is like right now? What if things are kind of falling apart that it looks really great on the outside, but things are falling apart inside closed doors and they’re desperately needing something to get them out of a career that’s sucking the life out of them? To save a marriage, to create some extra income so their kids can go to that certain school.
We have what they need
At the end of the day guys, it’s not about the money. It’s not about the check, right? We’re not looking to be like Scrooge McDuck and swim around in our big room full of coins. In some ways, it’s not about the weight loss and it’s not about the new program. It’s about changing lives and we have what I call the buffet of options. When somebody comes to me and says that they want to get started, I just tell them everything we offer.
“Great, you probably don’t want to start a business right now, you’re probably really busy, I understand that. We’re all busy, but before you spend money on that program or that nutritional supplement, why don’t I show you what we offer fully. How you can get a discount even if you don’t want to work the business right now, because you know what? I’m going to tell you this. I’m going to tell you that you’re going to use these products and they’re going to work and you’re going to be really excited about them and the people around you are gonna say, ‘Wow! I don’t know what you’re doing, but I want a piece of that.’ Why not already be set up to help those people get started? That you can already serve those that you love and help and you know what you’re already going to be set up the minute that person, ‘I want whatever you’re doing,’ that you’re going to have some place to point them that you get a commission on that. That your financial situation is going to change immediately because you’re serving those you love. Because you took initiative to lead by example and how powerful is that, right? You’re gonna do that so I’m going to tell you as your friend, as the expert, you’ve come to me and you’ve said, ‘Hey, I want to know more about that challenge group,’ or ‘I see you posting on social media,’ or ‘I see that you have an extra energy, something, a glow about you,’ you’ve asked me about that. So, I’m going to be forthright enough with you to say, ‘Yes, and these are the steps.'”
At the end of the day, it’s not about the money. It’s not about the check. It’s about changing lives.
And people are going to try to negotiate with you, “Well, I just want this part and not that part.” And at the end of the day, they can take the part that they want, but I’m gonna, they’re coming to me as the business owner, as the CEO, as the head of what I do, and I say, “You came to me. Do you trust me to do the things that I’m going to ask you to do to get the results that you tell me that you want?” And if they say yes, then I say, “Great. It’s the whole buffet. It’s signing up and being a business owner and coach on my team at the beginning of your journey when you don’t feel like you’re qualified yet.”
We’ve got your back
You know why? Because I’m going to make sure that your’e qualified when the time comes. I’m going to take you step by step. People are looking to you. Start carrying yourself as that expert. Start carrying yourself as that business owner even if you don’t know all the answers. You don’t know have to know all of the Policies and Procedures. You have a team of people that you can lean on that at any time you can say, “You know, that’s a great question. I’m still kind of new, can I get back to you on that?” Nobody’s going to think less of you.
In fact, that’s such a powerful thing about this business. Because however you present this to somebody, they’re going to look at you and subconsciously they’re asking, “Could I do what that person just did with me?” and if you have to go through all the details of Shakeology, all the Policies and Procedures, and how the comp plan, you have to get this long drawn out monologue, they may be impressed by you and you get to show off your smarts and how much you know, but they’re not going to get involved with your business because they’re going to go, “Wow. That was impressive. I can’t do that.” Because the minute you say, “Do you want to be a Coach?” They’re going to go, “No! There’s no way I can do what you just did!”
But if you just ask some questions and point them towards a third party tool like a video or a call, ask them what they liked best about it, and then help them get started. Because when you help people do what it is that you’re doing, that’s when this thing duplicates and your business moves away from you. That you’re not having to just be a retail king or queen, right? Well, I have to sell 50 Challenge Packs just to you know pay my cell phone bill this month. You start being a leader of people, you start creating an army that’s moving in a direction, but how does that start? It starts with one person. You. You have to be the Coach and the type of person that you keep saying you’re looking for.
“Jimmy, nobody on my team is doing anything.” Well, you know the person you have to look at first? The person in the mirror. Are you leading by example? And if the answer is yes, then you just haven’t talked to enough people because your team is always going to be a mix of discount coaches that just love the products, love them where they are don’t try to make them something they’re not. Treat them like VIP customers. VIP customers and make sure that they get the very best results with our products and our programs. But then you’re also going to have those that want to just use this as a referral. “Hey, every once in a while I’m going to get a referral or two here to offset my Shakeology.” Great, love them where they are.
Keep bringing in new blood
But you gotta keep talking to new people every day all the time, because out there is that person that has the same fire in your gut that you do that wants to do something amazing with their life and they’re just waiting for you to say, “Hey, I thought of you. Would you take a look at something? This may not be for you at all and that’s fine. You can tell me no and we’re still friends, but something in my gut says that this might be for you.” And they may say no, and that’s okay. It’s off your conscience. You’re doing them a favor. But what if they say yes? What if you save somebody’s life this week because you offered them an opportunity?
You got out of that scared zone. That instead of success club points, you started recruiting business builders. That you start treating this thing like the CEO, like the owner of your own business. I recently had somebody say, “Wow, Jimmy. I want my business to look a lot like yours,” and I explained to that person, I said, “It’s not sexy. I’m not the top recruiter. I’m not a fast builder. I don’t have the biggest team.” And they said, “Well, I see you in all these different places and you’re doing so much, how did you do all that?” I showed up. Every day for 8 years and I’m still showing up today.
I tell my team all the time, outgrow me. Have success faster than I did. Outrank me, out earn me, but you know what? They’re going to have to work their asses off to do it because I show up every day and I bust mine. So I tell them to pass me, but I’m not going to make it easy. You do the same for your team. Show up. Be the type of leader you’re looking for and then you’ll attract those people. Be a business owner, you’ll attract other business minded people.
Because when you help people do what it is that you’re doing, that’s when this thing duplicates and your business moves away from you.
