Insider Tips & Tricks to Setting Goals
And we are live on Facebook! We’re trying this, it’s brand new. My name is Coach Jimmy and we will see who pops on here. I’m excited to see what’s going on if I can get the other thing…three, four, five viewers. Welcome!
My name is Coach Jimmy, some of you know me as Jimmy Hays Nelson. Music is poppin, please say hello as you pop in and we are talking goal setting today. I am making this a New Year’s Resolution to do more live trainings like this. I love teaching, I like doing it in the live stream format. We have used some of the other apps that I don’t think we’re supposed to talk about on Facebook because Zuckerberg doesn’t like it.
So I’ve been over there, but I’m going to try this because I have such an amazing audience and friends of people here on Facebook I think it may be even interesting. Look, even my wife even joined! She has to hear me talk all damn day and she’s still jumping on here. I think that there’s something wrong with that poor woman.
I want to be able to give back and teach the things that I’ve learned. Had somebody not shared their answers with me, I would not be where I am today.
So, welcome! Thank you guys for jumping on. For those of you that maybe don’t know me, I feel like I don’t have to introduce myself as much over here on Facebook because my feeling is that most of you are already my friends, but I’m going to start doing some business trainings every morning at 9am so if you are an entrepreneur or you have an online business, if you’re specifically in my business and you want to get your teams on, this is something that I really want to make a priority in 2016 because I enjoy teaching and I get numerous, numerous, numerous requests (I’m gonna kill this music real quick) numerous requests to talk on team calls and stuff like that and while it’s crazy flattering, it really is, it’s crazy flattering, you can ask my wife.
If I said yes every time that I was requested to be on a team call, I would never see my family at dinner any night. I don’t take that lightly, I don’t say that to brag, I just say that I love teaching, I love speaking at my heart, but also I’ve designed this business for freedom to spend time with my family. So I’m like, I want to be able to give back and teach the things that I’ve learned whether you’re in my business, another home business, whether you’re building your own products online whether in network marketing or MLM.
There are things that we have learned and that I have learned in the past this will be going on my ninth year in this industry and in this business that I want to share with you guys because anything you hear me say, teach, or implement, I didn’t make them up. I’ve been so blessed with so many amazing mentors and teachers along the way and so I just find a way to put my spin on things and pay it forward because had somebody not shared their answers with me, I would not be where I am today.
Who the heck am I?
So for those of you that don’t know me or know a bit of my story, and then we’ll get to goal setting super fast, but I think it’s probably important to be like, “Why am I listening to this guy? Why should I invest time to sit here and chit chat with him?” And something keeps dinging on my computer and it’s driving me nuts. We’re going to try to kill that real quick.
So my name is Jimmy Hays Nelson, people know me as Coach Jimmy. I’m coming live to you from Dallas, TX. My background was not in…there was nothing in my background that said I was going to be a successful entrepreneur or a business person.
In my mid-twenties I found myself as a three time college dropout, I had moved back into my house with my parents, I was 100 pounds overweight, and I had dreams and visions and desires to be a performer and an actor. But as you can imagine, if you’re trapped in a body that you hate and your confidence is really low, being in front of a camera or on stage in front of people even though you know you’ve been given a gifting to do that, there’s a real conflict there and, thankfully, I had some people come in my life that started teaching me, step by step, the things that I could do to change my life.
It didn’t happen overnight.
The weight loss didn’t happen overnight.
The business building about this didn’t happen overnight.
Success 9 years in the making
This has been…2015 was a really big year for us and we hit quite a few milestones in our business. And so for those of you who aren’t familiar with our business, basically we hit the biggest rank a team can hit. My wife and I were just awesome, we hit the Millionaires’ Club in our business. We, in fact I’m going to show you the goals I wrote down last January and this will be a nice segway into setting goals and why setting goals right now is super vital.
Set scary goals
This was the first year where I wrote down 10 pretty scary goals in different areas of my life and I have to give credit where credit is due and that credit goes to Bret and Chalene Johnson. I had worked with them and their mentorship group the last 2 years. For those of you that don’t know Chalene, she is that awesome woman right there. Some of you know her as a fitness chick, some of you know her as a business trainer, maybe you’ve gone through Smart Success or Marketing Impact Academy. Her and her husband Bret have literally changed my life, my family’s life, and taught us so much.
And last January, we went to a retreat with them, those of us that were in their coaching program, and Chalene literally asked us to set it wasn’t year goals, it was 90 day goals and I love the reason she did this.
So, we were sitting there at this mastermind and she looked at my friend, Mindy Lawhorne, (gosh I wish Mindy was on here) looked at my friend Mindy Lawhorne and said, “I got a question for you. Let’s say that there’s a big event that you get to speak at…” Mindy maybe the only person I know that enjoys being on stage with a microphone more than I am, or more than I do. And she said, “Okay, you’re going to speak at this event, you’re going to be in front of people, and the people that have set this up are going to give you two hours to get ready, to just look awesome, get ready. Would you take the full two hours?”
And of course Mindy’s like, “Absolutely! You know, I’m in my robe doing the makeup and the hair. I would take the full two hours to just feel amazing before I jumped on stage and performed,” or taught or whatever Mindy was asked to do.
And Chalene’s like, “Okay, well that’s great. Okay, let’s say something went wrong and that exact same event, same training, and you had to be ready in 20 minutes. Could you do it? Well, what would you do?”
And Mindy’s like, “Yeah. Because I’d have to. I’d make it work.”
And Chalene said, “That’s exactly what happens with us and goal setting. So many times that we give ourselves two hours, figuratively speaking, two hours in something that should take us 20 minutes.”
Stop padding your timeline to be safe
So, I hear it in my business all the time that people are going to hit certain ranks or certain income levels and they give themselves like this super long timeline because it’s “safe”.
“You know, I’m going to do that in a year. I’m going to be there by the summer,” when really 90 day goals, and so this is what Chalene had us do. We had to do an exercise where we set 90 day goals, now I’m gonna share with you, like I said, my board got colored by a 2 year old and a 4 year old the other day so it’s a bit messy, but I’m going to share with you what we wrote down as 90 day goals.
Now, did I hit all of these in 90 days? Nope. In fact, two of them took me until December of this year to finally check it off, but all 10 got done. Some got done a lot sooner than others.
And so when you’re setting goals, I think it’s really important, the other thing that we took away from that is setting goals in different areas of your life. I think, and I’m probably going to butcher this, some of the areas we had to set goals in we had to set a financial goal, there was like a business goal, a family goal like maybe vacation time or family type thing, there was something that was just your pure joy like something that really just fed your spirit, financial goal, and there was a couple others, but so we just had to write these down and then she’s like, “Okay, you have to set a 90 day goal for each of these.”
And it was super uncomfortable to write. I mean, and the fact that she made us write them down, and I think that so many people keep their goals and ideas in their head, right? Environment, thank you Kelly. Environment was another one. Spiritual, there’s my wife. I knew she would remember all this. Spiritual goal and environment goal and what do you mean by environment?
People always ask me that one and it’s like you can upgrade a house or remodel the kitchen or upgrade a car or something about an office space. Something about the environment you’re in because for me the last couple years, environment was a big one for me. We just moved and so, should I just share my goals and just show you this board and I can kind of explain a little bit better from there what we started with and where we went?
I’m going to see if I can do this here and you may not be able to see all of them.
So here’s the big board. Can you see where the 2 year old and the 4 year old decided to get into my office the other day? So you may not be able to read all of these, but I’ll go through them. It’s cool.
Keep your goals somewhere visible
So some of the ones that we had set…so I wrote these down on a piece of paper at the retreat I was talking about in January and as soon as I got home, these went on this whiteboard and they hung up above my head in my office.
So they were there, but they weren’t like right in my face all the time, but literally everyday I would walk into my office and I knew that these things were kind of literally hovering above me. They were sitting up top near my ceiling and so here’s some, I’ll just share these with you guys.

Hit 15 Star Diamond Coach
So, I wanted to become the top rank in my business so that’s the top one there, 15 star Diamond, and for some of you that doesn’t mean anything and don’t worry about that. It’s just that I wanted our team to reach a certain rank so even if you’re not an entrepreneur, maybe you have something at your job that you want to get promoted, you want to get a title, you want to be Employee of the Month, or something along those lines, but for me, that was that business goal and that rank is a team effort. That isn’t something that I could have done on my own.
So that was the most challenging one because it required a team effort, it wasn’t something that I could just put on my shoulders and my back and achieve, right?
Finish & launch a tier system
So, the second was to finish and launch a tier system and for people that work with me and my team, we created a tier system so I knew where to spend most of my time so as people come in, they work through these tiers and each time that they transfer from one tier to another, they get a different amount of my time, one on one calls, mentorship.
So this one had a lot to do with how I work with the people that I mentor. That was a big undertaking and we really were kind of scrapping what we had done in the past seven years and improving it. I’m always looking to improve the people that choose to work with me. How can I serve them better and that’s really where that one was born out of.
Six weeks of expenses in savings
We wanted to have 6 weeks of expenses in savings. So we figured out that if we didn’t change anything, this wasn’t like we’re going to cut back cable, like I wanted to know to the penny, which my wife really helped with because this is her strength, is if we lived the exact same lifestyle what would we need if our business say totally went away tomorrow, how much money would we need to live for six weeks without changing anything?
Obviously if you lost your job or your business went away, you’d probably make some cutbacks. But I wanted to know if that went away, how much money would we need liquid? Not in long term savings, but that I could go, “I need this money now.”
And what’s crazy is that the six weeks money, six weeks of expenses in savings seems like one of those that you’re like, “That seems super daunting to me,” and that’s one that we hit super soon. After we put it out in the universe and I wrote it down and it was there, that one happened, Kelly correct me if I’m wrong, that was one of the first ones we checked off and I was like, “Holy smokes!” That was one of the ones that I thought was going to take the most time.
Buy a new car
Number four, which was my environment one, was to get a new car. I had put that one off for a long, long time. We had built a very significant and successful business, we had upgraded and moved into a neighborhood that I wanted to be in so to where we live now, we had kept putting money away, and for whatever reason, I just kept putting that one off.
My wife kept saying that, “Hey, you keep talking about that you want to upgrade your car,” and she really encouraged it and encouraged it to the point to where one day our son was gone, she went off to drop our son off and she came back and the door rang, and I never answer the door. The doorbell rang, and I’m just sitting in here working, and there’s a big knock on the door and I’m like, “What is going on?” and I walked outside and she had gone to our local car dealer to grab a car to test drive it for the day.
She was like, “You’re going to get in this.” She knew the car that I had been looking at and she’s like, “I want you to drive it around for a day and see what it feels like,” and not even 24 hours later we ended up getting the car.
And it did! It just made a difference!
I had heard other people say that there’s something about when you upgrade that car, something about…maybe your environment thing is upgrading your wardrobe or hiring a personal shopper or something about the way you dress and carry yourself.
Kelly and I actually did that a couple of years ago as part of our environment upgrade, we had hired a, for those of you that know Coach Glitter or Tiffany Bymaster follow her. She’s a styling expert. We became clients of hers and I was like, I need to come across more professional and she did some great things on tweaking our wardrobes and how we put ourselves together and so the car was the same thing and it may seem kind of frivolous and that’s the battle I kept having in my head was, “Man, that seems really shallow and you’re not defined by your car,” but it was important.
It was kind of the last thing that I have to give props to my wife for just nudging me over the line and saying, “Yes, you’ve worked hard on this business. You can spend this money there,” and so we did that.
Create & host a men’s training event
Number five was to create and host a men’s training event. My particular business, even though we have very testosterone products like this one over here with Shaun T, for the last couple years it’s become very female dominant. And I just felt like there was just the need in our network and in our business that guys needed to know that there are other guys having success with this business and there just needed to be a rebirth of men building home businesses to be with their family.
That is something that was something I am very passionate about so I teamed up with some other leaders and we did create and host this men’s event last year. We had 420 guys, we sold the thing out. In fact, we have the next one. Tickets are on sale right now for you guys that are watching. Tickets are going quickly. Go to TrainingCampEvent.com, if somebody wants to put that in the comments that’d be awesome. TrainingCampEvent.com.
We have the next one coming and we have a killer lineup; Gary Vaynerchuk is going to be there, Bo Eason, former Green Beret Scott Mann, as well as a bunch of guys that run six and seven figure online businesses. We’re going to be showing people how we do this and what we do.
So, awesome. Oh, hey Wendy. Welcome!
Reclaim my inner artist
So, one, two, three, four, five, six! Six was about one of the areas that was just pure joy to you and my theme for 2016 is reclaiming my artist.
So for those of you that don’t know, I did a post about it this morning, that my background is in musical theatre and literally five years ago when my son was born I stopped performing and I had some vocal issues and I stopped singing. And that was a really big part of my life growing up, that’s what I went to college for, I had gone to New York City to pursue that as a career for four years, and I just felt like I was missing this piece.
I was really self conscious about it because I had lost the confidence because I’d had these vocal issues and I felt like I lost this gift that I’d had. So one of the things that I had put down was weekly vocal lessons. I am really proud to say that I have, I am teaming up with Roger Love this year. Roger Love is the vocal coach for Tony Robbins and Suze Orman, but he was also the vocal coach on the movie Walk the Line. He works with Demi Lovato, he’s worked with…I love when I walk into his office and there’s like Def Leppard and there’s just Grammys everywhere.
And so this is the year that I’m reclaiming and taking back my inner artist. I would love to find ways to incorporate almost musical theatre style scenes and stuff into business training. I think that would be really cool, I may be the only one that thinks that really cool, but we’ll find out! This year I want to incorporate that. In fact, I’m heading back to LA in a couple weeks to have another lesson.
So, we’re making progress. We’re not there yet, but we’re making progress. It’s humbling because I’m learning to have to re-walk again. So that one was checked off.
Eliminate excess credit card debt
Another financial one was to eliminate any excess credit card debt. Very, very proud to say that that’s gone. That was a big stressor. I grew up my entire life in my household always hearing about credit card debt, why we can’t do this because of credit card, and I had a real jacked up relationship with money for a long time growing up. Credit card debt as you guys know that can stress out a family, a marriage, those things can just…we still use credit cards, but we use them in a wise way and we pay that sucker off every month now. We had to get ahead of it though so Kelly and I sat down and we reverse engineered that.
I’ll talk about reverse engineering here in a second because you may be going, “Jimmy, how did you do all this?” Let me go through the list and then we’ll get to that.
Take the last two weeks of December off
Next one, fudged a little bit. My goal was to take the last two weeks off in December. I literally took about the last week and a half off. We hit the big goal, we launched ticket sales for the current men’s event, we hit the 15 star Diamond goal, and then my daughter decided to make an early appearance, who was born two days after my birthday on the 29th, and so I was kind of forced into taking some time off.
It was about a week and a half, but there was a week there where I literally didn’t touch my business at all, I didn’t workout, I literally took the last week off. Which I think was really good for me and for the family.
Launch a new YouTube channel
The next one was that I launched a new YouTube channel. YouTube and video is a place that I want to continue to build my business. I feel like that’s a place where I have some gifting with my background in acting. I enjoy being on camera obviously. I wanted to get over 5,000 YouTube subscribers on a YouTube channel that I built from scratch.
If you have subscribed yet, just go to YouTube.com/TheCoachJimmy and subscribe! I have a YouTube channel there called, I mean a show called Training Camp with Coach Jimmy where I literally interview people with six and seven figure online businesses and they tell you all their secrets. It’s pretty awesome.
Complete my recruiting funnel
And last but not least was to complete my recruiting funnel and that got done, and this is also being tweaked, I feel like this year I’m going to start moving towards a lot of webinars to recruit and to find new people I want to work with and mentor that maybe interested in joining our business.
But there is a recruiting funnel up now, you can go to JoinCoachJimmy.com. I have a 4 part video series where over 4 days and 4 videos you can see whether or not working with me makes sense. If it’s for you or not.
It’s a no-pressure way for you to peek behind the curtain to see what I do and see if it’s something that makes sense for you or not.
Write your goals down
That’s what we did in January, I wrote those down so maybe that’s step #1 is identifying those different areas of your life and writing them down, not just thinking about them, but literally put pen to paper. There’s something magic, and I love my digital Evernote and all this stuff, but there’s something magical about putting pen to paper.
This is one of those things that I carry with me all the time and then writing that thing down.
And what Chalene and Bret made us do was we literally had to write down these goals again every Monday morning and they just get in your head. Every Monday morning without looking at them beforehand was, “Do I remember it? Was it important enough to me to remember that thing?”
Those were the 10…there were some that popped on and off, but those were the 10 that every Monday morning when I would write those down that continued to stay and continued to show up so I was like, “Okay, these are important.”
Again, if you’re taking notes, which I really hope that you are. If you’re going to sit here and invest the time to watch, take notes.
What are those different areas?
What’s a financial goal?
Be specific about your goals
When you’re setting goals, “to be better” is not a goal. “To build my business” is not a goal. “To lose weight” is not a goal. Nothing is dynamic unless it’s specific.
I’m going to take a sip of coffee.
I need to be able to measure it. For example, one of those goals was six weeks of income saved. Well, I can’t set that as a goal if I don’t know what that number is. “I want a savings account” that’s pretty vague.
Everything on here, let’s see, everything on here was measurable. It wasn’t subjective…subjective? Objective? Subjective? It wasn’t like, “Oh, yeah. Well I got better!”
Set goals that require extra effort
The other thing that I really learned about goal setting is don’t set a goal that’s just going to happen naturally. So for people that are in a business, don’t set the goal for something that’s just going to happen on your natural growth curve. Does that make sense? Like something that’s going to happen without you having to put in some extra effort into it or get a little scared or get out of your comfort zone.
Fail your way to success with huge goals
So the other thing…while I’m thinking about it, let’s talk about this in setting these big goals. What if you set them and you don’t hit them? Okay, here we go. You guys will love this, specifically those of you in some kind of like other Beachbody Coaches or in a home business.
I’m about to show something that’s going to blow your mind so get your teams on here really quick. Get extra people on here. Somebody go tell our team to flip on here.
I’m going to show you how I failed my way to our best year ever. Would that be helpful?
Ugh, I’m out of coffee. I’m out of coffee!
Alright, so, this board right here was what my wife made me at the beginning of the year. This was the goal for how many people I wanted to…new business partners that I wanted to work with this year.
So helping new people start a business working with me as their mentor. This was me personally, not our team-wide, but just me personally.
There are 168 squares on this board.
As you can see, there are stickers for everybody when somebody would sign up, they would get a sticker with the date, where in the organization we put them, and dude…I didn’t even get half.
Look! Most people would look at that and go, “You suck, Nelson!”
Look at that. That’s not sexy at all. That’s a lot of white space. That’s a big, fat [thumbs down]. That was awful. I ended up…now, I will tell you the first year that I ever did this was about last year or the year before last and I had this goal of, “I’m going to bring in a hundred people. I want a hundred new business partners this year.”
Oh, there’s a time limit on this? I have four minutes left! I didn’t know they timed these things.
Well. You can only do these things for 30 minutes. Okay! I learned!
That’s actually pretty good because I can ramble for a while and I’ve got stuff to do.
In four minutes…nope Todd, you’re yellow. I just had to look at that. That’s funny.
So a couple years ago, I was like, “I’m going to get a hundred…I would like to help a hundred people get started,” and so Kelly made me this board with a hundred on it and we failed! We ended up getting I think 60 that year and it was so funny that I was so mad and then I went back and looked. I was like, “Well, what did I do the year before?”
I didn’t even check what I did the year before I set the goal for a hundred.
I doubled!
I brought in 30 people the year before so I brought in 60. This year, we set it even bigger like, “Oh, 168!”
We ended up bringing in 57, no 55 people last year. In fact, we were under, but if you think about it, 55 people into a business is quite a few people and so think about that. For those of you who are in my business or a business like that, if you brought in 55 new people this year, do you think that your business would change?
Now, I didn’t set my goal at 55. I set a big goal, I jacked it up and brought in less. That’s what I’m talking about. You have to set a goal that gets you out of your comfort zone. If your goal is to bring in 3 new people a month, that shouldn’t be your goal. Your goal should be to bring in 10 new people a month and you’re going to get 3 by accident.
When you get out of your comfort zone, you’ll find that it wasn’t all that comfortable.
The last part, and we have two minutes left, now watch this. Again, I just told you that we had our most successful year ever. I’m going to start going through these people, watch this.
Quit. Stayed. Stayed…stayed and actually activated, business builder. Quit. Quit. Quit. Quit. Never activated…signed up and never did anything. Quit. Amber Schultz is on here, she just commented, brand-new Diamond Coach, this girl has rock star written all over her. She’s just getting started. Quit. Quit. Quit. Hanging around not doing anything. Still around. Still around. Quit. Working the business. Quit. Inactive, so that means that they’re not product…they didn’t quit, but they’re not doing anything. Quit. Quit. Quit. Quit. Holy smikees. Quit. Quit. Here, but not doing a whole lot. Here, but not doing a whole lot. Quit. Here, but not doing a whole lot. Quit. Quit. Inactive. Pastor Pal, if he’s on here…rock star in the making. Around, with potential. Not around. A good discount person on my team that uses the product, that’s awesome, that’s good. A guy that wants to re-engage. My mom. Guy that quit and was super ugly to me on his way out yesterday, called me the scum of the earth…that happens to me too. Around.
So you get the idea. More people than not didn’t do jack out of that 55 people. Twenty seconds left.
So, guys. If you found this valuable, this video lives even when I get cut off. Will you do me a favor and share it to a place where people can see this?
I will commit to being here most mornings at 9am CST if you will show up. Okay, love you guys. Take care. Two, one, end of the live video.
