That wasn’t Planned!
How to Stay on Track During Unexpected Schedule Change!
by Coach Jimmy Hays Nelson
So you have made the decision to eat better, start exercising, and taking better care of yourself. You’ve worked hard to train yourself to get up a little earlier each day to be able to squeeze in a workout and grab a quick breakfast before rushing into your busy day. You’re feeling better, you have more energy, you’ve finally figured this healthy living thing out. Then, like a sneaky right hook from a heavyweight boxer, an unexpected schedule change knocks you back to the mat, and you feel like you have to start all over to regain the momentum you worked so hard to build.Have you ever felt this way?
As an actor, my schedule can change on a whim with very little notice. For example, today I have to drive from Dallas to Austin for a commercial call back. (I just made this trip on Friday for the initial audition) As you can imagine, driving 3 hours to Austin for a 20 minute audition then driving back 3 hours to Dallas is NOT part of my daily food/exercise routine. So how do I stay on track?
1. Food Prep is Vital
I’ve said it a hundred times, but it is so true. Those who fail to plan, plan to fail. Prepping your food in bulk and having meals ready to go will be a huge key to being able to keep eating foods that will shrink your waistline and boost your energy even when unexpected emergencies pop up in your schedule.
Here is a short video I did during my audition trip last week, talking about how I save time, money, and calories by following this simple step.
If you haven’t read my article on how I prep my food each week, I encourage you to do so by clicking here.
2. Don’t be afraid to adjust your set schedule.
What do I mean by that? Well let’s go back to my unexpected audition. Sunday was scheduled to be my rest day. Once I got the email that I needed to be in Austin on Monday, I knew the likelihood that I would have time to do my full Insanity Asylum Volume 2 workout dropped dramatically. So I adjusted. Because my workouts are important to me, I sucked it up. The Sunday I had planned to stay in my sweatpants all day while watching football suddenly became my day to do my Upper Elite DVD. Was it ideal? No. Did my body want the Sunday rest? Yes. But I know my goal is to workout 5-6 times a week, and now that Monday would be compromised, it became vital that I get a good sweat in on Sunday.
3. Accountability is Your Bounce Back Key
My Four Pillars of Success Equation is:
Fitness + Nutrition + Support + Rewards = Results
Out of those four I strongly believe that Support is the magic key! Support and accountability are what help us get back on track ASAP. Many times when these unexpected schedule changes happen we do miss a workout, or we have a day when we do grab fast food. Those who will continue to see success despite those hiccups are the ones who bounce back the quickest!
Will one bad day, turn into 2, that turns into a week, that becomes a bad month, that turns into 25 pounds gained? The way to prevent that is by being accountable to your support community. When your schedule blows up and all your best laid plans go in the garbage, let your accountability partner know! Just ‘fess up, and ask them to help you make sure that you are back on track the following day.

Emergencies and unexpected schedule changes are just a part of life. But follow these 3 guidelines and you will be able to stay on track and live the healthy lifestyle you deserve regardless of what is happening around you!
