Get Work Done Even When You Aren’t Feeling it
Hi! My name is coach Jimmy and welcome to today’s video. We are talking motivation and what to do…how to get motivation, what happens if you had motivation and you fall off, or what happens if you’re really motivated to do something and all of a sudden you are not moving your ass and you are not doing anything anymore because you say, “Jimmy, I’m just not motivated. I lost my mojo. The fire went out,” or whatever I get it.
So for those of you that don’t know me and joining me for the first time before getting into business, I found myself as 100lbs overweight, 3 time college dropout that in my early 20s was living back at home with my parents. You want to talk about lack of motivation? I literally…ended up in a kind of like Groundhog Day, right? There you go. So it’s almost Groundhog Day and it literally felt that way to me. At that point in my life 100 lbs overweight, dropping out of college, not finishing my degree, living back at home, not pursuing my dream, I got stuck in this rut where everyday felt like the same day.
I don’t know, I may be aging myself here, but you remember like the Dunkin Donuts commercial where the guy was like, ‘Get up. Time to make the donuts,” and then he would go off and then it was like the same thing over and over again and I don’t know it you have ever felt that way where literally each day is just a repeat, a repeat, a repeat and you don’t have any motivation, you don’t have any fire, and you have kind of set in this rut and every once in awhile you will get inspired or you will jump on a video like this and you will be like, “Yes! I need to change! I need to do something!”
So we are going to talk about what do you do in those times that you have motivation and what do you do in those times that you don’t? And for those of you who are following me on snapchat, TheCoachJimmy at snapchat. This Monday morning was one of those days that I was not motivated. Just not feeling it. My alarm goes off at 4:40 in the morning and I get up and I go do about 20 minutes on a step mill to get my blood flowing and to do some kind of…kind of set my mind up for the day and get ready for this work out and I just wasn’t feeling and of it today.
And so what do you do when you just have no motivation at all?
Understand Your ‘Why’
Well before then you got to know what it is that you are going after and why. You know I was just talking to one of my mentorship groups and I was talking about we have an incentive trip that we set up for our team and this year we are going to Disney World and it’s going to be this big amazing training trip. And somebody is like, “Ah, I want to go on that trip!” Now, we’ve set the bar pretty high for the requirements to give them this trip and she is like, “I don’t know how I’m going to do it, but I am going to get on this trip.” And I quoted one of my favorite speakers Les Brown talks about it, “If you know what you want and why you want it, how is none of your business.” How you are going to do it is none of your business, but if you know why you are doing it and what it is that you want, if you will show up and move and take steps everyday the how will show up.
And sometimes motivation can be this tricky little thing as well, so people are like, “I want to lose weight. I want to build a business. I want to get out of this job that I hate. I just want to get out of this rut of just simply surviving each day and I don’t know how to do that because some days I am really motivated and some days I am not.”
You have to make a decision right now that you are going to show up every day regardless if you feel like it or not. Your goals don’t care if you feel like it. The world around you that’s trying to keep you from those goals certainly doesn’t care if you feel like doing something today and if you only rely on the times that you are motivated or you feel like doing something or you are inspired or it’s just that perfect pose or that perfect video or I am just going to, “This one is going to be really a high quality one.”
Show Up No Matter What
If that’s the only time you ever build a business, post on social media, do your workout, eat healthy, take your supplements…if the only time you do that is when you are really inspired and really on fire and feeling super creative and stuff, you are not going to make any progress at all. You’re not. Because those days are few and fleeting and those days are like magic and they are awesome! Those days I get up and my creative juices are flowing, but let me tell you this. So let’s use my morning as an example. Monday morning alarm goes off, my wife has been awesome as far as taking care of our newborn, but still having a newborn sleeping in the bed with you, your sleep schedule is kind of on and off every time you hear you kind of wake up and go back to sleep and I just wasn’t feeling it.
And so this morning I popped on…a lot of times I listen to like a sermon or something inspirational in the morning and that would get me going and that didn’t get me going. I jumped on that step mill and I got to the gym, I am not feeling it. So let’s stop right there. Wasn’t feeling it there wasn’t any magic motivation that took over this morning. I went to normally what is you know a staple of mine that creates a motivation, but I still got up. It wasn’t like I laid in bed because I didn’t feel motivated.
Because why I need to get up and what I needed to do was a higher priority to me than just that I didn’t feel like it. So, again, I am just going to try whatever I can if it is a playlist and I got on the step mill and I flipped on…I was like, some days I feel like listening to music, some days I feel like watching something on YouTube, and for me, I was at the gym and I got on the step mill and I went over two I was like…I find Gary Vaynerchuk pretty motivating at time and he has this series called The Daily Vee that he has been doing and it literally follows him throughout the day.
So I was like, “Well, that would be kind of like watching a movie and if nothing else I will be on the step mill getting my sweat on and I will be distracted.” I was like, “Let me find something to distract myself from the fact that I don’t feel like doing this right now.”
Move When Your Mojo Hits
And so I got on there and I started listening to Gary and watching him doing his stuff and building his business and all of a sudden my mind started rolling and I started thinking about other things and something he said gave me an idea for something I could do and all of a sudden before I knew it, my mojo was kind of in there.
I was stopping the video and taking notes and I did a couple of Snapchats of like what I was going through at the moment and before I knew it I had jumped off Gary’s video and put a playlist back on and the music was rolling and all of a sudden that magic motivation that you are waiting for externally to just hit you, like this magic motivation lightning bolt to hit, that was happening. But if you wait for a motivation to hit you like a lightning bolt, well you know what the odds are getting struck by lightning. They suck! People don’t get hit by lightning very often. So you got to create that.
Once my body starts moving, once I start sweating, once I start getting out of my comfort zone physically, my brain start moving and you know what’s crazy? Anybody can do that!
So, what happens if you lose your motivation? Great. You need to figure out what it is that you can sometimes manipulate yourself to getting motivated. Manipulate yourself into that creative space. Manipulate yourself and a lot of times for me it’s always starts with moving my body somehow. Regardless if you are talking physical transformation or you’re talking your business or whatever else.
Saturday morning I sat here and did 3 hours of training. That morning I got up and went and ran four and a quarter miles. I am not a runner, but I knew if I was going to be my best for my audience I had to get my body moving first. I had to get my body moving first and so I got up put on sweatpants, put on my hoodie, it was kind of cold outside, and went and ran because I knew in running and having the right playlist on that my brain start moving in and it never fails. And once my body starts moving, once I start sweating, once I start getting out of my comfort zone physically, all of a sudden my brain start moving. My brain starts moving and you know what’s crazy?
Anybody can do that. Anybody!
Anybody can get moving. You can get your ass outside and go for a walk, or go for a run, or put in a DVD and do a home workout or get to the gym. Anybody can do that!
So I don’t care when it is. You can either do that in the morning, you can do it at night when you get home, you can do it there in your lunch break. “I can’t do that” or “I don’t have time” is a bullshit answer.
You have the same 24 hours that the President has, You have the same 24 hours as Beyonce has. You got the same 24 hours that Oprah has or Gary Vaynerchuk or me or any productive ass person that you know.
So you’re saying, “Oh, I can’t do this” or “I don’t have time to do this.” It’s just a bullshit lie and do you think all those people that you admire, do you feel like they are probably motivated every day to do what they do? Hell no. Hell no they don’t feel like doing it every day, but you know why they are them and you are not them?
Because they show up anyway. They show up on days they don’t feel like it.
Make Your Own Motivation
So if you lost your motivation, I say sorry about that. I am not going to cry with you. I am not going to feel sorry for you. I am going to say, “Get your ass up and make your a new one.”
Make your new motivation. In fact why I created, I have a series 5 Days Fire, 5DaysFire.com. It’s called the 5 Days of Fire and literally what I did is I sat down and thought about what did I do…the same five steps that I used to get moving and motivated to lose 100 lbs and keep it off for over 10 years now, is the same five steps that I used to get my business moving.
There is no time to feel sorry for yourself. There is no time not to move. If you choose not to move, then nobody is going to feel sorry for you.
So it’s a matter of if you want to do it. If you’re lazy and you don’t feel like doing this shit, then this isn’t for you. I am not talking to lazy people. I don’t motivate lazy people. I don’t tolerate lazy people. I work with the doers. I have no clue…I am tired…I mean, I don’t work with people that keep telling me what they’re going to do or they wish they were doing, because if you don’t put any action behind what you wish or what you want, then it’s just bullshit.
I don’t have time. There is no time for that. There is no time to feel sorry for yourself. There is no time not to move. If you choose not to move, then nobody is going to feel sorry for you either. Don’t ask for sympathy. Don’t ask for pity.
Go move! Create your own motivation, and like I said, you can go to 5DaysFire.com and I even laid it out for you right there, I mean that’s my 5 free video series.
That because once I sat back and I realized, I was like, “Oh, it’s the same.” I don’t care if you’re trying to get fit or trying to start a business or whatever it is in your life that you’re trying to create, you are trying to write a screenplay, you want to write a musical, you want to create an online course, you want to start a podcast whatever! You just have to show up and you have to keep showing up whether or not you see immediate results.
Be in it For the Long Haul
Just because you showed up today doesn’t mean all of a sudden you are going to be motivated tomorrow. Just because you showed up today doesn’t mean five pounds are falling off. Just because you showed up today doesn’t mean your bank account is getting bigger either. You just have to keep moving and you got to continue to show up and you have to…in my training over the weekend, I talk to people about making a commitment to be here a year from now. Regardless of whatever you are doing, you just say, “Okay, I am going to show up every day and I am going to be here a year., I am going to give this a year to build this business, to learn this skill, to create is craft, to get in this shape whatever.”
It just drives me nuts that these people that want magic to happen in a week or they want magic to happen in 30 days. We are in such…this flipping microwave society of instant gratification and everybody wants to be famous and everybody wants to have an online business and everybody wants to be an entrepreneur and everybody wants this life for freedom, but nobody wants to put in the flipping work.
I was talking to a buddy of mine one time and he is looking at my business now and he is like, “Jimmy, you’re everywhere. Your videos are here and you’re on Snapchat and you’re on here and you are on there and whatever.” And he’s like, “How do you do all that?”
And I was like, “I didn’t start doing everything. It was the same way with my physical transformation. I started moving my body a little and I started with small little changes to my nutrition. What I do now was not where I started.” And he is like, “Well, how did you get to where you were going? How did you get…”
And I said, “Dude! I showed up every damn day for the last 8 and a half years. That’s where I am where I am today, but I didn’t start right here, I didn’t start working out every morning. I didn’t start getting up at 4:40 and putting something in to listen that change my mind and lifting weights and jumping on my business and you know doing stuff for Periscope and Facebook Live and you know loading that stuff to YouTube and creating killer Instagram graphics. I picked one little things and I decided to show up every day there whether I felt like it or not.” Because I was told you need to create content every day.
Consistency is Key
Man, I got coaches that I tell all the time, “Cool, you need to be consistent. I need to see something new from you every day to post,” and they don’t. They only do something when they are inspired or when they think it’s perfect or when they think that it’s polished and that’s why they’re stuck! Because you know what I am going to post something today that’s going to get crickets. I am going to shoot a video…you know, it’s funny because I really think I kick ass in these videos and I upload them to YouTube and there is some on my YouTube channel that’s like 40 likes and I am like, “Man, that sucks because that video rocks. More people should watch that one.”
But am I disheartened because I only got 40 likes or because I have 50 people watching me on Periscope right now and not the 1,000 that I had this weekend? No! I am still here giving you the exact same content, busting my ass to serve, and to do my best today.
Because you know what? Granted, maybe you only got 3 likes on that post or you only got 20 minutes into that workout or you only ate 80% clean today. Part of that…somewhere in there…if you continue that, the magic is going to happen and it’s going to turn the corner.
So right now, 50 people watching me on Periscope. Well, what if 1 of those people are looking to maybe join my team or do business and that one person is my next Rock Star that blows this shit up and I get a chance to mentor them. Then it was worth my time? Even though 51 people just jumped on here? Absolutely!
If you only rely on the times that you are motivated or you feel like doing something or you are inspired, you are not going to make any progress.
“Oh, only three people like that post.” Well, what if one of those three is an influencer that’s going to connect you with your next opportunity. What if one of those three is a producer that wants to like, “Oh, they need their own TV show because I saw this guy get on and do a rant on Snapchat. I saw this guy get on and do a rant on Facebook Live. I saw that chick’s post and I see some talent there!” and they want to help you take the next step to the next part of your career whatever that is.
But it’s never going to happen if you only show up when you are motivated so that was the name of this video.
Like what happens when you lose motivation?
You recreate it.
You start taking steps and one of my favorite stories, Zig Ziglar talks about this, and he said Zig Ziglar talks about how you can’t look at a furnace. You think all old school and you look at the furnace and you say, “Okay, once you start producing heat, I’ll add logs to the furnace or to the fire.” It doesn’t work that way. You have to add logs and then the fire starts.
You got to go chop the tree and drag the firewood in and through it in and kindle it and work it and then the fire starts. Quit waiting for the fire to start before you add logs. It doesn’t work that way. Motivation just doesn’t happen and let say this video is, maybe this is one of those times when you are like, “Oh, I really needed this today. Jimmy lit a fire under me!” Which I think…you know what? I appreciate the compliment, but it’s bullshit.
Put Motion Behind Your Motivation
You didn’t need this today. You needed to move today. You needed to go take action today. You didn’t need this video to make you do something or to light a fire. I get that every day. “Jimmy, you lit a fire under me, Jimmy, you really motivated me.” Okay, great. Let’s say I did. Then you need to act on it right now.
Whenever that motivation hits or that emotion, that’s all it is. It’s emotions. It’s endorphins released in your brain. It’s the same thing that gets released when we work out. The minute you feel that, you got to put action behind it. You got to put action behind it right now. Go do it! Whatever that thing is that you have been putting off, that work out. Cool. Shut me off right now, go move your ass and work out.
Go call that person that you wanted to join your team that you keep chickening out about.
Go make that phone call to pitch that idea to launch the business to somebody.
I don’t know what it is that you keep getting in your own way, but go do it! Go do it right now and take action. Go take action right now. Because you know what it’s like that endorphins that gooey gooey “Oh, I am so emotional,” feeling that when you go to an event or hear that motivational speaker, it’s going to go away. It’s got to go. You know it because you’ve done it.
I call it the Church Camp Syndrome, right? Every summer we used to go to Church Camp and we would take this big bus from West Texas, I grew up in Lubbock Texas, and we’d take this bus out to Colorado to Silver Creek Ranch. Silver Creek? Silver Cliff. Silver something and we go there and you would have a week and they’d give you sermons and you feel good about it and you’re like, “Oh, I’m going to come back and I’m going to change my life! I am going to live better,” and it’s so easy when you are up on the mountain and everybody is singing church songs and singing Kumbaya, but you know what? You got to take the bus off the mountain and come back to flat ass West Texas when all your friends aren’t as excited about it anymore.
And then are you still changing your life then or is it just easy to say it when you were surrounded by a bunch of people and a bunch of rah rah right?
The minute you feel that motivation, you’ve got to put action behind it and you have to do it right now. Get off your ass and move!
Well you are in a bunch of rah rah right now. You are watching this video, you have commented about that thing that you want to get done, and it’s a big rah rah right now, but tomorrow I may not be here to cheer you on. Your buddy may not be here to cheer you on. Hell, you may have people around you that are judging you. Maybe your spouse rolls their eyes at you when you’re getting up at 4 to do that workout. “Why are you doing that workout?” Or you jump on your phone at lunchtime to build the business or you are shooting that video and you don’t know what the hell you’re doing. You just turn your camera on and you are like, “I totally suck at this!”
Great! Go suck at something today because you’ve got to go move. To suck at something or to fail required some action. It totally required some action.
So and like I said, if you do need something everyday go to 5DaysFire.com, sign up, and you can have my videos everyday and maybe that’s what it is. Maybe I am your magic wand. Maybe in the mornings, you pop me on. Great. I am glad to serve, but me with no action, it doesn’t matter.
Motivation with no motion equals no results. Motivation with no motion equals no results. And you guys have heard me say it before motivation is overrated. I don’t care if you’re motivated. I really don’t and because everybody crutches on that shit and there are so many ways to get motivated immediately. There are so many Instagram accounts that are all these motivational quotes with awesome pictures. You can jump on YouTube anytime and put in motivation and watch any epic thing to make you move. It’s never been easier to find something to motivate you. Jump on YouTube, put on a playlist…there are a lot of these success Instagram things, follow your favorite person on Snapchat, and you know, it’s funny and I did share this this morning with my workout partner.
You know what really helps me when I am not motivated and so I told you I put on Gary Vaynerchuk’s DailyVee. If I go watch somebody at the top of their game like in the zone, I get motivated. So that could be watching Gary Vaynerchuk as a business entrepreneur trainer, but I could also put on and watch a dancer who is at the top of their game or listen to somebody sing who is at the top of their game or watch a work out video or whatever. Watching somebody at the top of their game just dominate, that’s motivation for me because I’m am like, “Look! They showed up every day and that’s why they are that bad ass.”
In fact on my Coach Jimmy page on Facebook, once a day I am sharing a video of somebody who obviously shows up every day whether or not they feel like it or not and they are awesome and I am celebrating that. Like yesterday I put on this guy that was just this amazing musician. I’ve never seen him before but I was like, “That dude shows up every day, I bet, weather he feels like it or not.” And we just think that these people always feel motivated to do stuff and they don’t. They don’t.
So make your motivation today. Tell me in the comments today how you are moving. Not what motivated you about my video, but what are you moving to get it going. You got to put motion behind the motivation. You got to put motion behind the motivation.
So, thank you guys for joining me. My name is coach Jimmy. Be motivated today and if you are not, I don’t care. Go do some shit anyway! Somebody is relying on you to chase your dreams today. When you start taking action, you are going to impact of somebody else. Go get it done today and we will talk soon. Take care.
