Last night I met up with a few friends to go through a 30 day test group of Shaun T’s new workout program INSANITY: THE ASYLUM. The first workout is actually a Fit Test, or an assessment of where your current fitness level is. During some of these extreme exercises Shaun continued to remind us to tighten our core to help us with balance and speed.
Balance and Speed …. 2 Things I feel pretty confident about while working out, but also 2 things that have become very challenging in my day-to-day life.
As many of you know, I have a new 3-month-old son, Asher. He is my pride and joy, and I am forever grateful to the Beachbody Coaching Opportunity for allowing me to be able to stay at home with him all day as opposed to dropping him off somewhere to trek to a ‘traditional job’ – HOWEVER- as everyone reading this with children can attest, my personal schedule and my 3 months old schedule rarely sync. (And I have NOT been able to find an App to help me with that!)
My constant personal development and time management training reminds me that I will work much faster if I concentrate on one task at a time. (Anyone else out there find their desktop has 7 windows open …but nothing is really getting done????) I tend to be a little scatter brained while trying to attack all 20 things on my to-do list at once, as opposed to one at a time. Now throw a new baby into that mix, and it reminds me of the first time I ever attempted P90X Yoga. Lots of sweating, falling over, and thoughts of ‘There is No Way I Can Do This!’ But I know balance is a process, something that only gets better if worked on consistently.
I want to be 100% present Dad when Asher needs me. Not half paying attention to him while typing a blog, answering emails, and talking to a new Coach on the phone. So how is that done??? Well I know in fitness when trying something new that seems impossible you first need to modify the move. You strip down the move to its basic core without the speed and intensity. You do this in order to make sure you have perfect form so you don’t develop bad habits for the sake of trying to go hard and fast. As you master the move in its modified form, then you can be assured that as you add speed and intensity your technique won’t be jeopardized.
So that is how I look at this stage of fatherhood. My current situation may have adjusted the rate I am used to running by business, but I know that in the end if I take the time to work on my technique now, I may sacrifice some initial productivity, but it will serve me well with a more balanced life in the end.
