How Gratitude Changes Your Mindset
Hi! My name is Coach Jimmy and today we are talking gratitude and how gratitude is the number one thing you’re missing in your keys to success right now. You know it’s so easy to look at things of what’s not going right. What weight haven’t we lost. What part of our business isn’t working. What part of our team isn’t growing. What part of…it’s just human nature to just focus on what’s going wrong. Where you’re stuck. Why is my team not doing stuff? Why can’t I get people to buy my product? I have been working out and eating clean for two weeks, why did the scale go up by two pounds?
It’s just so easy to get stuck into a frustrating or a depressive situation. Always just focusing…here is the perfect example. On YouTube as you’re nice enough to hit the like, the thumbs up, somebody, and watch because they say this to me a lot you know these people, there is always the two people that hit the thumbs down.
You could by talking about the fact that you are saving baby puppy’s lives and somebody is going to come and hit that down one. You’re going to obsess over you have a thousand ones of these (thumbs up) and you are going to look at the one of this (thumbs down). You’re going to look at the one comment, the one negative thing, the one thing that’s not going right. That’s frustrating and I am telling you, this is a shift for me. Anytime I am getting frustrated, anytime I feel stuck in a rut, I have to go back and focus on what am I grateful for.
What am I grateful for?
In fact, I was on a mastermind call with James Wedmore the other day, and this is a group of rock stars. Just some of the best, best business builders in this thing and it’s a bunch of rock stars in the online business world. He started it with asking us all, “Okay, before we even start talking business and what do we need to work on, what is one thing you are grateful for?”
And it made me stop. I was like, “Oh, okay.” So we all have to go around the circle, we were all on this video chat, and we all to talk about the one thing we were grateful for. It really does just shift your mindset.
Focus on what you have and not what you don’t
So right now, you may be frustrated that business isn’t getting off the ground or that eBook you are working on that you have writer’s block on or that nobody is listening to your podcast or you’re jumping on Snapchat and nobody cares and you are just feeling like you are talking into the wind.
There have been a lot of times in by business where I literally feel like I am taking into a void. I am like, “This isn’t impacting anybody. I think I wrote the greatest post in the world and nobody is showing up.” I am inviting people to this webinar or to my coach sneak peak or I am inviting people to my health and fitness challenge or whatever it is that you do and nobody shows up so you are like, “Okay, pause. What am I grateful for?”
When I focus on what I am grateful for, this momentum picks back up and gets rolling.
Well, it could be as simple as, I woke up this morning. This coffee taste delicious. I am thankful that I have all my limbs that I can do these workouts. You can be thankful for the people that are engaged with your business. I may have…maybe I only have two people that like that post or three people that showed up to my whatever, be thankful for those individuals. Be thankful for the people that…and how can you show them more gratitude.
I used to do this, I used to have like live INSANITY. I used to teach like live INSANITY classes and there were times when I would teach like 6 in the morning and there were days like two people would show up and it was really hard for me at first to go, “Man, I should have more people in this class. Don’t they know who I am? I am in the damn DVD, blah blah blah blah.” And I really had to check myself. I am like, “You have two human beings that woke up at the butt crack of dawn to come jump around in the gym with you this morning, be grateful for that.”
Because I did have days where nobody showed up and those days really stunk to get up that early and have nobody in the gym with you.
So what is it?
You got to really think…what is it to be grateful for?
Where’s your head at?
I am telling you, it just shifts everything and I just find that when I focus on what I am grateful for, this momentum picks back up and gets rolling because really what you focus on, and if you’re focusing, if you’re looking straight down, it’s being on a high wire and saying, “Don’t fall off. Don’t fall off. Don’t fall off.” You’re going to fall off.
If that’s the focus is don’t fall off, don’t fall off, don’t hit that tree, don’t hit that tree, I am going to hit the tree. So what it is that you are focusing on? What is it that you are grateful about today? This is something I have to check myself constantly. I don’t have this down. I am constantly been reminded of something like, “You need to be grateful,” instead of focusing on, “Gosh. I am still working on a new series of how to get the people I mentor up and running better. I totally snapped at a guy the other day.” I could start going on and on and on and by the time I list all the things that I am dis-satisfied with, I am going to be really depressed.
If I start saying, “Okay. I woke up this morning. My wife didn’t have to go a job she hates like she did when our soon was born now that we have a one month old daughter and because we built our business. So that’s something to be grateful for. I had time with my family this morning. My commute is two seconds from downstairs in the kitchen up here to my office. I am not sitting in traffic this morning. Okay, that’s cool. I don’t have a boss to answer to. I am grateful for that the fact that I can come on here and teach you guys. The fact that forty seven people or thirty nine people or all the other things I got going on right now, that you are giving me your time that that’s your life that you are giving up time to hang out with me. That’s pretty flipping awesome. I am very thankful for my team and the ones that do plug in and the ones that do activate I am thankful for.”
Take stock of what you have
And so all of a sudden when you just start…I would challenge you today to make a list.
Make a list of the things you are grateful for right now and see if it doesn’t change your productivity.
See if it doesn’t change your creative sparks.
See if it doesn’t change your outlook.
I am really quick, and we’ve talked about this before, I am really quick to use angst and anger and getting pissed off as like a jumping off point, but I was telling my wife this morning that the things that drive me, and the people that watch my Scopes and say, “Jimmy, I love how raw you were and I love when you go on one of your rants and stuff,” and it’s my fuel, but it’s a double edged sword.
That anger can fuel me and that anger can bite me in the ass and it has, I’ll be honest, the last week a couple times where I flew off at somebody and I look back and I was like, “Man, I didn’t handle that well.” It’s hard to balance, again back to the tight rope, sometimes it’s hard to balance that so I have to remove myself and go back and say, “Okay, what am I grateful for? What am I thankful for about that individual that I just snapped at? How could I have handled that better? What am I grateful about for them right now that they frustrated me or that situation frustrated me?”
Remind yourself of what’s truly important
I am grateful that I am running a business that allowed me to have influence with somebody that they came and asked me a question. That even if it was like that eight hundred times they asked a question or that…I am trying to think of without getting real specific. There are two or three times that I’ve kind of flown off the handle in the past couple of weeks. I have to go back and surround myself in kind of in my coat of gratefulness and say, “Okay.”
It’s so easy to rally the troops and talk about how ‘We need change and this is wrong and this is bad and blah blah blah,’ and you have got to be careful not getting stuck in just focusing on what’s wrong and what still needs to be done. There will always be stuff that still needs to be done. There will always be work that needs to be done. There will always be systems that are broken. There will always be people telling you no. Don’t worry, there is always something to get pissed off about.
Take the time to be grateful for the things that are going right, right now.
Even if it just seem like the smallest little thing, celebrate those little victories like you won the Super Bowl, like it was a big deal, and you will find that your momentum will shift. Your outlook will shift. People will be attracted and drawn to you more because they’re just like, “Wow, that person is so grateful for what they do. That’s the kind of person I want to be around.” Because if you’re just like, if you saw the movie Inside Out, don’t be Anger all the time and I am.
I love that little Anger dude because I am like, “That dude get shit done,” and he does. He gets a lot done inside me but you know, great. I guess Joy would be a little bit of grateful if he say the movie. I thought it was a really awesome interesting movie.
But be grateful. I don’t have…this may not be the deepest one of my Scopes or going into like big depth rants, just be grateful. Do me a favor, let’s do this.
Share with me in the comments one thing you’re grateful for today. Let’s help each other be grateful and let’s start this week off on a grateful note. I am grateful that you took the time to watch this.
Thank you. My name is Coach Jimmy and until next time, I am grateful for you.
