A Little Bit of Something Is Better Than A Whole Lot of Nothing!

September 8, 2011 by Coach Jimmy

As someone who owns their own home based fitness business, I have always been thankful that I chose to partner with Beachbody. Not only for the brand recognition of programs like P90X, INSANITY, and TURBOFIRE, but because these are world-class programs that have helped me achieve far better results than my years of wandering around a gym, burning money and time with little to no results.   Even though I had ample free time when I started my first Beachbody program (Power 90), I still loved the convenience of being able to walk to my DVD player (Not having to worry about bed head or needing to wear the best looking gym attire!!), pop in the program, and get in a great workout!

Now let’s fast forward to the past 7 months of my life and how it has completely changed due to one word……

FATHERHOOD!

For most people, having kids is a great excuse to put on weight or compromise their health. I mean, after all, Mom put weight on during her pregnancy and Dad put sympathy weight on by supporting Mom’s cravings, right? They both had the best intentions to get back on the “workout wagon” together as soon as the doctor cleared Mom to start exercising again. But now, that extra free time they had to pack a bag and drive to the gym has been replaced with feeding and changing the newest family member.

If I can’t get in an hour workout, I’m doomed to become a soft chunky parent, right????

WRONG!!!

That kind of all or nothing attitude is what gets most new parents in trouble. Before you know it, the kiddo is 2 years old, and what started as a little weight to lose has become the need for a major body overhaul!

Yesterday’s workout was a prime example of this for me. My 7 month old son finally laid down for his mid-morning nap.  I jumped into action to get my P90X Chest, Shoulders, and Triceps workout done. I was rocking along when, at the 30-minute mark, I heard the familiar cry of a hungry, teething little man who needed my attention. Was I disappointed that my workout was interrupted? Of course! But I also knew that giving it my all in that 30 minutes would serve me well in my long-term goals.

Maybe you are having trouble even sneaking in 30 minutes of time to invest in yourself. Perhaps a program like Tony Horton’s 10 Minute Trainer is the solution you have been looking for. Or maybe just putting the little one in the stroller and taking a brisk walk around the neighborhood is a good starting point. It’s a great way to get out of the house, enjoy the fresh air, and clear your mind from the grind that comes with being a new parent.

Bottom line… don’t let the lack of having the ‘ideal workout plan’ keep you from finding little pockets to invest in yourself! In the long run, it will make you a better parent, improve your energy levels, help you deal with stress, and set a great example for your new addition!
