I used to think people misinterpreted the word motivation. They’d say, “I will start working out when I get motivated.” And I would always think that if they had the ‘want to’ then that in itself should be their motivation. But looking at the definition, it seems that the people that lack motivation really are saying that don’t have a big enough reason to get started.
So, using my pattern during my 100 pound weight loss journey, I want to show you how to get motivated to exercise. It really just comes down to 3 simple steps.
1. Identify Your Specific Why
What I mean by that is really identifying why you want to start a program like INSANITY or P90X. So many people just give a generic ‘I want to lose weight’ reason. Unfortunately for those people nothing becomes dynamic until it becomes specific. In other words, we have to get very specific in not only what our goals are, but why we want to reach those goals.
So if your goal is to lose 25 pounds – GREAT – that is a defined specific goal. But take it a step further. Why do you want to lose 25 pounds? Or better yet, what would change in your world once you lose those 25 pounds? Questions like that give a much deeper reason for getting started.
2. Share Your Goal With Someone
Now this step can be intimidating for many people – especially guys. Somewhere along the way, most of us fellas somehow picked up the idea that sharing goals and aspirations was only something girls did, but I will tell you from experience that accountability and support goes a long way in making your dreams reality.
Be choosy in who you share your goals with. You want someone that will support you, encourage you, and hold you accountable for your actions.
3. Take Action When Things Aren’t Perfect
I think everyone has fallen into the trap of “I will get started when….” Or, as Brian Tracy calls it, ‘Someday Isle’. You know the phrase – ‘Some Day I’ll _______’ You can fill in the blank with a number of goals. Exercise is right up there towards the top.
I encourage you to just start where you are. Start now in the midst of your imperfect life. I don’t care if that means you only workout for 10 minutes a day and you know you have 2 birthdays and an office party around the corner. START ANYWAY! Let me let you in on a little secret. Just between me and you. Promise not to tell anyone…..
Life will never stop so you can finally get started on that exercise program.
The minute you just accept that as fact, and learn to just start where you are with what you have the closer you will be to gaining momentum and being even more motivated to exercise!
