Saturday morning, Jimmy and I found ourselves kid-free for a few hours! Asher went to play with his Nana and Gramps which allowed us to get the house straightened, do laundry, weekly food prep and workout! I was in our closet changing into my workout clothes when I noticed a box at the top of our closet. I call this box my “one day maybe” box. With pregnancy and then now post baby, I’ve gained and lost 59 pounds, so I have a box of clothes that one day maybe I’ll fit back into.
Just for kicks, I decided to pull the box down. I figured it would give me motivation for my workout! In the box were three pencil skirts that I used to wear when I worked for a hedge fund in NYC. Super sassy skirts that I was so bummed to grow out of when I got pregnant! I figured I’d stick them in my “one day maybe” box to see if I would be able to squeeze into them one day!
I grabbed my favorite blue one out of the box first and put it on. I took a deep breath before attempting to zip it, telling myself that I would be OK with however far it would zip up (you know, like a little pep talk!). Then I tried to zip it…and it zipped all the way up! WHAT?!?! I ran into the living room to show Jimmy (definitely needed a witness!!) So then I tried on the other two skirts and the same thing happened – they both fit too!!!! HUGE SMILE! 😀
Then I tried on this great little strapless dress that I wore on my honeymoon almost 9 years ago. It fit too!!! And I found a pair of Lucky Brand jeans that I use to squeeze into in NYC – this would be the real test! Buttoned AND zipped…and I could breathe!!!
I’m not sharing this with you to get pats on the back or to feed my ego. I share this with you because it’s been a long time coming to get back into these pieces.
The media has totally jacked with women when it comes to our post-baby bodies. Big companies are paying new moms (celebs of course) MILLIONS to shed their baby weight in record time so they can be plastered over every commercial and magazine ad. While I’m sure those mommies work hard to lose the weight (wouldn’t you if there was cash on the line???), what happens if their bodies aren’t ready to shed the weight? Jessica Simpson recently caught lots of flack for not slimming down in the time allotted in her contract.
My heart breaks for her. Instead of being able to enjoy this amazing time of “firsts” in her life and relishing in the fact that she is a new mommy, she’s probably super stressed about a stupid number on a scale. And we all know how stress just makes your body hang onto fat. The first few years of motherhood should be focused on nurturing this life that you brought into the world who is solely dependent on you.
Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that Moms should turn into couch potatoes and not workout or worry about what they eat. I’m saying that this should be a journey – in each woman’s own time. Our bodies all react differently to pregnancy – both pre and post.
The past two years have been such an emotional roller coaster for me. Growing out of all of my clothes and gaining 56 pounds during my pregnancy and then the realization that I still looked pregnant after I had Asher!!! I started working out when the time was right for me – doing workouts that I could modify at the beginning and work my way up. But the key for me was having support from other Moms who were in or had been in my shoes. I could reach out to them with questions or for motivation when I felt down. And they are there to celebrate with me when I hit milestones!
If you’re at a point in your life where you’re ready to make a change for the better, but don’t know how to start or what to do, I have a solution for you. We’re getting ready to start a P90X Challenge Group. What’s a Challenge Group? Take a peek at this video – it explains it perfectly!
This is a great opportunity to start that journey – Moms, Dads, Grandparents…anyone!! The support system that we’ve created is the secret to seeing results! It’s a safe place where you can come when you have a bad day and don’t feel like working out and where you can come to celebrate your baby steps!
P90X? Isn’t that an extreme program? I’m just starting out. – Yes, it’s the real deal – and it’s for people who are ready to see real results. The thing I love about P90X is that it has modifications for every move. The first two rounds of P90X I went through, most of it was done with modifications! You can do it too!
If you want to join our Challenge Group, it starts OCTOBER 15th, so there’s no time to waste! Click here to order your Challenge Pack today. Then email your order confirmation to send me an email to get access to the exclusive P90X Challenge Facebook Group.
With the holiday season swiftly approaching, let this be the year that you turn heads instead of turning to baggy clothes! We’re ready to change, are you?
Kelly Nelson, Beachbody Coach, grew up in New Orleans enjoying all of the yumminess that the Big Easy had to offer. Dancing 6 days a week helped to keep her on track, but after graduating from college and entering corporate America, her Big Easy lifestyle and eating habits soon caught up with her in the form of 30 pounds!! Now a wife and Mom, Kelly has not only kicked her carb-a-riffic diet, but shed 59 pounds post pregnancy. Her outlook on life has changed from “it won’t work” to “what if it DOES work”!!! Working together with her husband, Insanity’s Coach Jimmy, to end this trend of obesity is a dream come true!
